How the time card calculator works
For each day the calculator subtracts the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtracts the unpaid break. Shifts that cross midnight (for example 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM) are handled automatically. The weekly total is shown as hours and minutes and as decimal hours, which is the format most payroll systems use (see hours to decimal).
If you enter an hourly rate, hours above 40 in the week are paid at 1.5 times the regular rate, which is the general federal overtime rule under the Fair Labor Standards Act (U.S. Department of Labor). Some states and contracts use daily overtime or other rules; use the overtime calculator to try other cases.
Common questions
Is lunch counted as work time? Unpaid meal breaks are not counted, which is why the calculator subtracts them. Short rest breaks are usually paid; check your employer's policy.
How do I round time? This calculator uses exact minutes. If your employer rounds to the nearest quarter hour, convert with the decimal hours table.
